Sometimes it feels like walking through a piece of living history – as it does on the Mill Trail in Terento. Along the babbling Terento stream, you follow a lovingly designed nature trail where seven grain mills, some up to 500 years old, have been brought back to life. To get each mill up and running again, all components were reconstructed true to the original. In the past, water power was mainly used to grind grain, so the stream was a hive of activity. The quiet clattering of the water wheels, the rustic wooden buildings – you can almost feel the hustle and bustle that once took place by the stream.
A very special natural wonder awaits hikers halfway along the route: the earth pyramids of Terento. They owe their existence to a landslide during a violent storm in 1837. The raging Terento stream carried away huge masses of debris and even houses. In the years that followed, erosion formed impressive columns – crowned by protective capstones that give them their striking appearance. Today, the earth pyramids rise silently and imposingly from the ground – a fascinating place that shows us how powerful and creative nature can be.
The 4.5 km trail is gentle and family-friendly, accessible in summer and winter. Along the way, small watering holes invite you to pause and reflect, while the mighty giant spruce “Goliath” inspires awe. And if you like, you can visit one of the restored mills from the inside on Mondays during the summer months.
This excursion is like a walk through the past and the power of nature—calm, grounding, and full of little discoveries.
