Lago di Braies – A Natural Jewel in the Heart of the Dolomites

'Lago di Braies' – also known as 'Pragser Wildsee' – is not only the largest natural lake in the Dolomites, but also one of South Tyrol’s most iconic and enchanting sights. Surrounded by dramatic mountain cliffs and dense forests, this shimmering lake captures the hearts of visitors in every season.

In summer, the crystal-clear water glows in shades of emerald and turquoise, reflecting the towering peaks of the Dolomites above. Traditional wooden boats are available for rowing – a peaceful way to glide across the surface and take in the landscape from the water. Those who prefer to stay on land can enjoy a leisurely walk around the lake and admire it from every angle.

Fishing is also possible here – a chance to unwind and let the serene mountain atmosphere sink in.

In winter, the lake transforms into a quiet wonderland. Snow-covered trees, frozen reflections, and the silent beauty of the surrounding mountains create a truly magical setting. It’s an ideal place for mindul walking and appreciating quiet moments in nature.

A local legend adds to the lake’s mystique: it is said that once, wild mountain people hoarded treasures in these hills. When envious villagers tried to steal the riches, the mountain folk opened underground springs – and the lake rose up to swallow the treasure. Thus, Lago di Braies was born.

Whether in summer or winter, this lake is more than just a destination – it’s a place to pause, breathe, and be amazed by nature’s beauty.
